Have you always wanted to work with children? Or perhaps you want to develop your skills as an early years practitioner and move into a management position. Our early years courses are taught by experienced professionals, giving you the skills and knowledge to thrive in this rewarding sector.

Whether you choose a full-time course or an apprenticeship, you'll be taught by subject specialists with years of working in the sector.

You'll learn how the early years workforce supports children to learn, play and develop, and an annual overseas trip will give you an insight into how the sector operates in different countries. You'll explore key developmental milestones and how you can encourage children to reach them, and practice designing and facilitating creative activities with children. You'll benefit from our close links with local employers to gain real experience on work placements, putting theory to practice and building your confidence along the way. Our courses run from level 1 through to a BSc top-up in Early Childhood Studies. Whatever level you're working at, you'll benefit from our expert lecturers, unique support systems and small study groups to reach your potential.

What our students say

It’s not just sitting down and listening on this degree: you are asked to take part in activities that the children will one day learn from, share your own practice and discuss what you have learnt.

Meet your lecturer

Becky Ovenden,
Programme Lead, Early Years,

Becky’s interest in children’s learning and development began during a two-year voluntary position in a local primary school. Becky joined the College in 2015, initially teaching Level 2 and Level 3 students before joining the university-level programme. Prior to joining us, she gained a vast amount of experience within a number of very different early years settings over an eight-year period.

Her comprehensive and varied experience has enabled Becky to deepen and apply her own professional and pedagogical knowledge. Fully understanding the lasting impacts of a child’s early experiences and the effects they can have into adulthood, Becky is passionate about helping children achieve the very best outcomes they are able to and believes Higher Education teaching can make a big difference in allowing children to attain those outcomes.
