Course Overview

Would you like to become a barber? Our Level 1 Barbering pathway will help you build a solid foundation of practical skills and knowledge needed for a career in barbering. You’ll learn and work in the Aspire Academy of Hair and Beauty, the College’s own salon located at our Trowbridge, Chippenham and Salisbury campuses. The salons feature professional products and industry-standard equipment; you’ll experience a realistic and immersive working environment while being fully supported by our experienced lecturers. In our salons you will work with members of the general public who are paying clients, giving you an incredible insight into the real world of work – both on reception and in the salon itself. This qualification is suitable for anyone over the age of 16, and you don’t need any previous knowledge or experience to start this course.

More information

During the course, you’ll learn all the core skills to progress onto further training. These include health and safety, an introduction to the hair and beauty sector, presenting a professional image in a salon, shampoo and conditioning, cutting and styling men’s hair and facial hair, drying and finishing men’s hair and creating basic outlines in the hair.

The hairdressing department works with local employers to enrich your experience on the course. You will participate in structured work experience or work placements within their businesses, as well as exciting and unique lectures on specialist topics given by industry experts.
Usual entry requirements are 4 GCSEs at grade 1 or 2 or equivalent experience, but entry is determined on an individualised basis and subject to an interview.
You will have practical assessments in the Aspire salons, as well as theory-based assignments.

You will need to complete approximately three hours of home study per week.

Work experience is an essential part of your course and you will be expected to attend a salon one day per week. This will give you hands-on, practical experience of working in the industry.

The final qualification is a Level 1 Certificate in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector.
You will need a uniform and kit for this course – this will be discussed at your interview. In cases of financial hardship, funds may be available to help with the cost of this.

We also arrange educational activities and competitions as part of the course, which may incur an additional cost.
