Course Overview

Delivered at our Trowbridge campus in partnership with Oxford Brookes University, this course has been designed as a progression route from a Foundation Degree such as a Foundation Degree Early Years or equivalent level 5 sector endorsed qualification which brings together several academic disciplines. The course is structured to provide an inter-agency focus based on the outcomes of integrated methods and insights of the various disciplines that contribute to our understanding of childhood. It will support practitioners and professionals who are working in a variety of early years’ settings with families, playgroups, children’s centres, social care, schools and nurseries. Studying at level 6 is required if you want to be a future researcher in early childhood care and education, teach others, become future advocates, monitors and inspectors of services.

More information

The course includes modules in the following subjects:

– Preparing for the Dissertation
– Literature for Young Children
– Professional Roles in the Early Years
– Reflective Practice
– Outdoor Learning
– Representations of Childhood

Please note: Modules and course content are subject to change.
You will usually have achieved a Merit profile in the Foundation Degree (FdA) Early Years or an equivalent relevant Early Years related level 5 qualification of 240 credits subject to individual credit rating by Oxford Brookes University.

You are expected to be employed or in placement for the duration of the programme.

If you have not studied Oxford Brookes’ Foundation Degree (FdA) Early Years, you will need to produce a transcript of the modules and learning outcomes you have studied on your level 5 course to allow credit rating by Oxford Brookes and evidence coverage of sufficient comparable content.

Gaining a place on the course may also be subject to a successful interview and a strong UCAS application with an appropriate reference.

If English is not your first language, then you will need to show that your English language skills are at a high enough level to succeed in your studies.

You will need IELTS level 6.0 overall with 6.0 in Reading and Writing and 5.5 in Listening and Speaking.

Although GCSEs in Maths and English are not required for this top-up year, they will be required should you wish to progress onto teacher training programmes.

Screening: You will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
You must successfully complete several assignments related to individual modules. You cannot pass a module unless you successfully complete the required assessment.

Assignments take a variety of forms and each assignment is designed to assess specific learning outcomes for the module while the overall nature and pattern of assessment is linked to the programme’s learning outcomes.

Assessment criteria are rigorous, demanding and set at a level appropriate to your course.
You may be required to attend an interview and you can apply for this course via the UCAS website.

The UCAS institution code for this programme is O66.
