Apprenticeship student nominated for national award

A Wiltshire College & University Centre apprenticeship student is in the running to win a national award at the end of this week.

Alfie Read, who is studying the Level 2 Wood Occupations apprenticeship programme and is based at the College’s Chippenham campus, has been nominated for Apprentice of the Year at the British Woodworking Federation Awards.

Now in its 14th year, the BWF Awards Dinner is an evening dedicated to celebrating success in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing sector and shining a light on the great talent we have to offer. All award categories offer a showcase for the sector’s best projects, products, processes and people.

Alfie combines his apprenticeship programme with his job at Oakwrights Bath, a joinery company in Corsham, and his citation read: “Alfie’s employer praised his attitude, maturity and commitment, which are all reflected in the high quality of his work. His tutor added that he has proven himself as a skilled professional and leads his peers by example.”

The 18-year-old will find out if he is a winner at the black-tie event at the Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel in London on Friday 25th November.

Rob Hodges, Lecturer in Carpentry and Joinery at the College said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Alife. This nomination is an acknowledgment of the high level he is working at. He is a credit to the College and his employers and is an inspiration for other apprentices.”
