Giant lemon grown at the College makes national headlines

You may have noticed a story about one of Wiltshire College & University Centre’s giant lemons making national headlines this week!

Tammy Warren – who runs Bespoke Celebration Cakes in Wiltshire – purchased one of the College’s super-sized fruit at the recent Lackham Lambing Weekends.

The lemon Tammy bought was nine inches in length and weighed almost 1.8kg. After posting about it on social media, the story has gone viral.

Publications such as the Daily Mail, the Sun, the Mirror and the Metro have all covered the story, and it has even been reported on overseas.

Tammy has since gone onto use the lemon in a variety of bakes and cakes as well as making lemon syrup, lemon marmalade, fresh lemonade, lemon curd and candied lemon peel.

Tammy said: “It’s bigger than [my baby] Sebastian’s head. In this case, when life gives you lemons I made cakes, candied lemon peel, lemonade and will enjoy lots of gin and tonics.

“It’s been fun making all these different things with the lemon, I’ve loved it. We’re going to keep the seeds and grow our own.”

For those who don’t know, the College has been growing these super-sized fruit at our Lackham campus for decades – and even held the record for the world’s largest lemon back in the 1980s.

It’s great that this one has gone to such good use and it sounds like Tammy made some delicious bakes and cakes after picking it up at our recent Lambing Weekends.

If you fancy a career working with amazing plants like this, a course at Lackham – home to all of the College’s amazing land-based courses – is the ideal place to start.
