Film graduate returns to College to pass on industry insight

Film students at Wiltshire College & University Centre received expert advice from one of their predecessors this week when a successful alumni returned to pass on interesting industry insight.

Bethany Spence, who completed a BA (Hons) Film Production and Cinematography course at the College’s Salisbury campus in 2013, came back to the Southampton Road site to speak to the course’s current cohort.

Since graduating, Bethany has gone onto work on a total of 21 feature films, including huge blockbusters such as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Wonder Woman (2017), and the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion (2022).

Bethany works as a ‘Greens Supervisor’, meaning she oversees the design and building of sets that have a significant plant presence.

As part of her talk, Bethany openly discussed managing the constant challenges of her anxiety and mental health and how it should not be a barrier to students’ success in the film and television industry.

Bethany told the current students how the knowledge she gained on the course at Salisbury has proved invaluable in helping her to stand out from the crowd.

Kieron Evans, Programme Lead on the College’s BA (Hons) Film Production and Cinematography course said: “Bethany provided a very inspiring talk to our current group of students, which should give them more confidence to work towards their dream jobs in the film industry.

“It is always fantastic to welcome a successful graduate back to the College to hear how they have progressed in their career. I know the whole College is proud of everything Bethany has achieved since she completed her studies.

“Hearing first-hand from someone who was previously in their shoes will be of huge benefit to our current students as they look to make their way into the industry.”
