College students share their success stories after results week

Wiltshire College & University Centre students recorded so many incredible achievements during the two Results Days last week and we wanted to celebrate a few of their successes.

Many of our students are planning on continuing their studies and 63.5% of those who finished Year 2 of a Level 3 course this summer are headed to university. Students have also secured a route into work either through full-time employment or an apprenticeship.

Year 2 Level 3 Engineering student Ollie Clyde is among those students thrilled with his grades after achieving DDD and believes his time at the College has now prepared him perfectly to start a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Portsmouth.

Ollie explained: “I enjoyed the course because I am passionate about engineering. The course gives you all the theoretical knowledge and practical experience you need to progress in this sector.

“The course also offers lots of extracurricular activities – for our project we launched a weather balloon to the edge of space. The lecturers are always happy to help with anything you need and answer any questions. The College has great facilities, not just for your course, but things like the canteen and the gym, and the staff are very friendly.

“The College has helped me get the grades I needed to get into university and I am now going to study mechanical engineering at the University of Portsmouth. I feel confident going to university with a good understanding of engineering and practical experience of working with machines and tools that I wouldn’t have got in sixth form.”

Level 3 Early Years student Tamsin Burgess received multiple offers for university level courses – including at the College – after achieving incredible grades of D*D*D* but now plans to take a gap year from education and gain more experience in the workplace.

Tamsin said: “I really enjoyed the majority of topics we covered and the amount of detail our lecturers went into. The staff are all so supportive and there was always someone to talk to if needed. We also got great support with exams and assignments.

“I was accepted into Oxford Brookes University for an Early Childhood Studies course and was also offered a place on the College’s Foundation Degree in Early Years, however, I’m currently having a gap year to gain more experience in work as a Level 3 practitioner in a pre-school. I shall be applying to university again next year.”

Jake Cox has just finished the first year of a Level 3 TV and Film course and is looking forward to starting the second year back at the College in September on the back of a Distinction grade.

Jake said: “I have really enjoyed all aspects of the course so far. It has been challenging at times but in a positive way, as I have learnt a lot of new things and have had to push myself. I feel I have developed lots of new skills and gained a new-found confidence in my own abilities. The course has enabled me to explore my creativity and push boundaries which is exciting.

“The College provides a great working environment and the tutors for my subject are outstanding. I have benefited hugely from their knowledge and support – and their enthusiasm for the subject is contagious. I am looking forward to the second year of the course and hope to study TV and Film at university in 2023. My tutors are continually suggesting things to do in preparation for my next steps and have suggested universities that might suit me after College.”

We would like to congratulate all of our students for their achievements during the previous academic year and wish them all the very best of luck with whatever comes next.

Courses at the College starting in September are still open. To find out more or to apply, click here.
