Success for Lackham apprentice in World Skills UK Landscaping competition

A budding landscaper from Lackham has reached the semi-finals of the World Skills UK Landscaping competition.

NVQ3 Landscaping apprentice Adam McGarry was one of five hopefuls from the Lackham campus to enter the competition, which is a great opportunity for trainee landscapers to showcase their skills across a number of technical areas, alongside planning and material management.

James Bailey, who is an NVQ2 Horticulture apprentice working at Lackham and Level 2 Horticulture students Adam Rippon, Shane Jones and Stan Blinko, all joined Adam to individually complete a timber frame, decking and block paving as well as identify 20 common trees, shrubs, perennials and bedding plants.

During the competition, held at Pershore College, the team shared tools such as tape measures, a chop saw, power drill, impact driver, soft sand, paving blocks, decking timber and construction timber.

Anthony Cockell, Head Gardener at Lackham, said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for the students who gained valuable experience from the first heat of the international competition.

“Having to work to a tight deadline next to your competitors in the fantastic surroundings at Pershore College really put the pressure on but everyone left beaming with pride.

“We are delighted that Adam has made it through and wish him the best of luck in the next phase of the competition.”

The three-day semi-final of the competition, run by the Association of Professional Landscapers, takes place from 22nd to 24th August.

Beginning at Myerscough College in Preston and finishing at JA Jones nursery in Southport, competitors will take part in training covering planting, paving and timber work.

Eight competitors will then qualify for the final and from there use the skills they have learned to build elements of a garden that has been pre-designed for them.
