Wiltshire College is the only college in the country to have a specialist Motorsport Engineering centre based at a race track and is for the second year running, sponsoring the Formula Ford 1600 Championship.
The first race of the season on Monday 17th April saw Level 3 and Foundation degree learners take on the role as pit crew practising the mechanical skills learnt in the workshops on the Formula Ford racing car.
For Andy Grey, Level 3 Motorsport Engineer, this was his first experience working in the pit at a race meeting.
Andy said: “Today was epic!
“It was hard work and tense at times but the experience has been brilliant!”
The college team welcomed new driver, Matthew Cox, who took to the track for the first time at 12.55pm placing 8th.
Ben Murrill, currently studying for the Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering said: “Big well done to Matt and the team!
“We all worked very well together overcoming an unexpected problem with the gear box and I am really pleased Matt made it to the end of the race.
“It was great to see him place 8th, he has made us all proud.
“It has been a great start to the season.”
Level 3 IMI student, Alex Buley from Thornbury, also sat behind the wheel of his own Citroën Saxo for the first time in the circuit’s new Hot Hatch Challenge, a race for standard cars with naturally aspirated engines.
Placing fifth, Alex said: “This experience has been extremely nerve-wracking, overwhelming and exciting all in one.
“Years of saving money to buy and maintain a race car has come down to today – it is a dream come true.
“With the help of Wiltshire College and the skills I have learnt on the course, I have been able to action what I bought and it get it track-ready.”
