Childcare students learn Makaton to support them in their settings

Makaton training has proven invaluable for Wiltshire College & University Centre students’ in their early year’s settings.

The Children’s Play, Learning & Development students were delighted to achieve both their Level 1 and 2 qualifications during two intense sessions at the Salisbury campus with a recognised trainer, where they learned over 200 signs.

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable communication. This is commonly used in early year’s settings.

Early Years lecturer Jade Ashford said: “This is the first time that students have had the opportunity to do Makaton training and it’s helped them immensely.

“A lot of settings use Makaton for all children, however it is mainly used for children with additional needs that struggle with verbal communication.

“It has been so beneficial to the students that we are now organising further training for them.”
