Wiltshire College film students win 'Best Drama' at Royal Television Awards

Wiltshire College’s film department is celebrating after winning a prestigious television award.

The Manor beat off fierce competition to win ‘Best Drama’ at the Royal Television Society’s Southern Students Awards on Friday 23rd February at Winchester Guildhall.

Judges described it as an excellent film saying the “camera and acting worked well together to capture a fantastic portrayal of two young soldiers separated from their units in WW2.”

Wiltshire College Principal Amanda Burnside said: “I would like to congratulate our staff and students on this significant achievement.”

The action short, which was organised by film technician Tim Dodd and saw second and third year students studying the BA Film & Cinematography degree at the Salisbury campus come together to write, cast, produce, direct and shoot the piece on a Panaflex 35mm camera, tells the story of two soldiers on opposing sides

It was shot across the Wiltshire countryside over four days, starring Joe Ashman and Conor Hartnett and was an unassessed summer project, designed to encourage and extend students understanding of the demands of working as part of a full production crew.

Andrew Smith, is programme leader of the BA Film Production and Cinematography course, which is validated by Bournemouth University.

He said: “I would like to say a big well deserved congratulations to all of the students involved in this production.

“The award demonstrates the strength of teaching that students received throughout the entire three years of the degree.

“The RTS is a well-respected industry body and to receive an award like this confirms that the course, and indeed students and graduates from the course are getting a lot of things right.

“Onwards and upwards to the national awards.”

The Manor is now entered into the national awards which take place on Friday 22nd June.
