A love of the outdoors brought Zoe Hunter to Lackham to study the Land and Wildlife Management course.
Since leaving school she has done everything from a window cleaning apprenticeship to studying make up artistry, but almost halfway through the first year of the Level 3 course, the 24-year-old said coming to college was a “great decision.”
“I have learned so much since starting the Level 3 course including feeding the pheasants and putting worming medication in food,” she said.
“But I’d never been involved in a beater’s day before I had come here and it’s been one of the things I have found the most interesting.”
As well as enjoying the course, Zoe, from Warminster, said the whole college experience was great.
She said: “I have met lots of new people and made some fantastic friends.
“Lackham is very sociable and that also makes it fun, which I think is important.”
Like many teenagers, Zoe was unsure of what she wanted to do when she left school after finishing her GCSEs.
“I really had no idea what I wanted to do so I went to work with my dad and completed an apprenticeship in window cleaning.
“I had a few different jobs and a few years ago I also completed a make-up course which I did enjoy.
“But I like being outdoors.
“I’ve always ridden and when I came to a Lackham Open Event, I did consider an equine course too but the Land and Wildlife Management course really appealed to me and I already had riding experience so I thought this gave me new skills.
“Before I started college I was working full-time in a garden centre, and although I enjoy it there still, now part-time, I knew that plants weren’t what I wanted to specialise in.
“In April I have a work experience placement organised where I will be rearing chicks and I am very much looking forward to that."
“There are lots of opportunities here at Lackham and I would definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in pursuing a career in this industry whether it be conservation or gamekeeping.”
