Catering company owner helps business grow by studying RHS horticulture course

The owner of a catering company has developed his passion for food even further by studying a horticulture course at Lackham.

Clive Jackson-Wilding said he wanted to grow herbs so that he and his staff from Sweetpea Catering could use their own produce more when catering for events.

The 50-year-old from Melksham said: “I really liked the idea of using fresh herbs in dishes and also wanted to grow edible flowers for desserts, particularly when we are catering for weddings so wanted to learn more about growing plants.

Clive and his wife Helen set up their company originally based at their home.

Since then they have moved to dedicated kitchens based on the outskirts of Lacock catering for weddings, corporate and social events across Wiltshire and the West Country.

Now, the skills he has learned on the RHS Level 2 Practical Horticulture course has enabled him to achieve his ambition of growing the business further.

Clive said: “The course has been really good and there wasn’t a single element that I didn’t enjoy from propagating and potting on to soft and hard wood cutting.

“It was a lot of fun and I have already started growing edible flowers.

“My chef has an allotment and we are going to be growing different things there and I am now also sharing an allotment with other students from the course.

“It has also been such a confident boost to me and actually helped me in many different aspects.

“The whole course was a lot of fun and I can even say I enjoyed the exams!”
