Aspiring young chefs showcase culinary skills in Trowbridge as part of national competition

The heat was on in the Trowbridge campus catering kitchens as secondary school students competed for a place in the final of the Wiltshire Junior Chef competition.

Six pupils aged between 12 and 15-years old from schools across the county had 90 minutes to prepare and serve up a main meal, which went before three professional chefs.

The college was delighted to welcome executive chefs Hywel Jones from Lucknam Park in Bath and Robert Potter from The Manor House Hotel at Castle Combe to join its own head chef Steve Lloyd.

The three judges were impressed at the standard of cooking from all contestants but said 15-year old Vikki Pearcey Thorn’s delicious Beef Wellington with Blue Cheese sauce was a winner.

The Lavington School pupil will now receive mentoring from the judges ahead of the final on Saturday 14th October at Ashburton Cookery School where she will battle against the winners from Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset and Gloucestershire.

Steve Lloyd, who has been a judge in previous years for the competition, said: “All of us agreed that Vikki’s dish demonstrated an advanced level of skill.

“She made a beautiful pastry and the Wellington was cooked perfectly with the beef slightly pink and succulent.

“Her blue cheese sauce was smooth and creamy with a good balance of cheese and her vegetables were extremely well cooked.

“I was very happy to be involved as a judge and it has been fantastic for secondary school pupils to see the facilities we have on offer at college.”

A big well done to all the competitors for taking part!
