Lackham student says RHS horticulture course helped her gardening passion bloom

A back injury prompted one horticulture student to turn her gardening hobby into a career.

Kerrie Beaven was a beauty therapist for more than 15 years opening her own salon locally, but back problems had left her unable to work.

It was whilst she was recovering that she had time to think and re-evaluate her career.

She joined the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture at Lackham in September and says she is very excited about the future.

The 35-year-old from Chippenham said: “Over the past year or two I’ve taken a real interest in gardening and am quite fortunate that I have a large garden.

“Following my injury I knew that I wouldn’t be able to continue with the job I had been doing so that is when I decided to come back to college to learn more about horticulture.

“I’m so glad I did because I absolutely love the course and would come here every single day if I could!

“There is a really good mix of people and age groups and the tutors are also great.”

Kerrie said she was initially a little intimidated about having to learn theory after a long break from education but said she has surprised herself at how much she has learned.

She said: “I felt quite daunted about learning the Latin names for all the plants and flowers but have found that my passion for it has helped me to absorb all the information and I really quite enjoy it.

“Over the past few months I’ve taken a keen interest in growing vegetables and would love to establish some sort of kitchen garden business and café.

“I have also helped out with gardening at my son’s school and love getting children involved, so much so that I am setting up a gardening club which I am excited about.”
