Students launch collaborative album celebrating life

Wiltshire College & University Centre students were proud to launch an album they produced with musicians from a Salisbury charity and production company.
The Foundation Studies students performed the songs they wrote in collaboration with La Folia, which brings people together to create new music, at a special event at Salisbury Arts Centre on Wednesday 28th November.
Families and friends packed the venue, where there was also a chance to buy the album, entitled Celebrate Life, which was created as part of a project called Continuing Songs.
Students have enjoyed 10 sessions with La Folia at the College’s Salisbury campus since the start of term.
Donna McGuirk, Deputy Head of Department for Foundation Studies, said: “It has been a fantastic evening and the students have all been brilliant.
“They have transformed from being very nervous at the starts of the project to feeling much more confident, not only standing in front of a crowd tonight, but singing too.
“They have all worked really well together as a team and should be very proud of themselves.”
Many of the students involved have worked with the charity previously as pupils of Exeter House School.
Jamie Fitzgerald, aged 19, said he really enjoyed helping to create an album.
He said: “I have had such a good time working on this project and writing my own song which I also got to sing in front of friends and family.
“I can describe tonight in one word – epic!”
Howard Moody is Artistic Director at La Folia.
He said: “The Continuing Songs project was a true manifestation of something that had previously felt impossible to achieve, with all the songs sung by those who created them.
“It was a project – now an album with true artistic integrity.
“The discipline of recording fed into the confidence of the performers when they presented their songs live.
“We all felt as if we were part of a completely united band of singers and players, led by the students’ completed undefended and heartfelt openness.”
