Former apprentice flying high after winning prestigious award

A former Wiltshire College & University Centre apprentice is flying high after winning a prestigious award.

Michael Baller from GoSkydive won the Rolls Royce Advanced Apprentice of the Year Award at the South West Regional Apprenticeship Awards in North Somerset on Tuesday (25th September).

It was then double delight as the company, which is based at Old Sarum on the outskirts of Salisbury and offers the only skydiving apprenticeship of its kind in the world, also picked up the SME Employer of the Year Award, sponsored by BAE Systems.

Michael, who now manages GoSkydive’s apprenticeship programme after completing the College’s unique ‘Customer Service’ apprenticeship, said: “To receive recognition from the National Apprenticeship Awards is a real privilege.

“As a company the award is testament to out passion and commitment to excellence and the whole team at GoSkydive has helped to make the apprenticeship scheme what it is today.”

Alastair Baxter is the College’s Business Development Training Consultant and was at the awards ceremony.

He said: “It was an honour to be there on behalf of the College to support GoSkydive in their fantastic achievement of SME Employer of the Year.

"I have worked alongside them for nearly two years now and they have seen significant growth, which they credit to the success of their apprenticeships.

"It’s great to see their dedication and hard work being recognised at the South West  regional apprenticeship awards; we now wish them the best of luck at the national finals in November.”

The National Apprenticeships Awards, now in its 15th year, showcase the diverse range of apprenticeships and the tangible impacts they have on business and individuals.

The awards recognise excellence in businesses that grow their own talent with apprenticeships, apprentices who make a significant contribution to their workplaces and individuals who go above and beyond to champion apprenticeships.

Wiltshire College & University Centre has been working closely with GoSkydive for the past couple of years and was proud to nominate them for both awards, adding to their growing collection.

They are gaining quite the collection after Michael won top gong at the College’s annual Apprenticeship Awards earlier this year, with the company also scooping Medium Business Employer of the Year.

Since the apprenticeship programme was introduced there has been a 100 per cent success rate and recently a further 12 apprentices have also joined the programme.

Apprentices complete a two-year programme, with rotations through different areas of the business, learning everything from sales and marketing and customer service through to photography, video editing, health and safety and gaining their tandem skydive certification.
