MP praises College's University Status

A Wiltshire MP has praised the College for gaining University Centre status.
Claire Perry, who represents Devizes, and is also the Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, congratulated Wiltshire College & University Centre in her weekly newsletter and column in the Gazette & Herald newspaper published today – 27th September.
She said: “I am delighted that Wiltshire College has been granted University Centre status and want to congratulate Amanda Burnside and her team, who I know have been working hard for a long time to achieve this fantastic recognition.”
Ms Perry’s piece was focussed on education as young people across the county, and beyond, return or start their higher education courses and how she had been interested at the numbers of students embarking on non-traditional HE courses.
“In recent years, there seemed to be a sense that people ‘had’ to go to university and study an academic degree in order to get a great career,” she said.
“However, whilst the route is right for some, this left many young people without the skills needed to succeed in today’s modern workplace and I have been very pleased therefore to see the drive to encourage more young people to consider apprenticeships and hands-on skill training.”
Ms Perry said she would urge anyone considering an HE course to come and find out about the wide range of higher education courses delivered at the College, at all four main campuses and Castle Combe.
She added: “For any young people starting to think about what they might want to do after leaving compulsory education, I would suggest the College as a great starting point to seeing all the options available locally.”
