What are the issues? Energy

The Issue Wiltshire College
Global warming is the greatest risk facing the human race. Wiltshire College has an energy policy, and our main sites buildings are assessed for energy efficiency, with the results displayed in entrance lobbies.

Energy facts:

  • A typical window left open overnight in winter will waste enough energy to drive a small car over 35 miles.
  • Waste oil from nearly 3 million car oil changes in Britain is not collected; if collected properly, this could meet the annual energy needs of 0.5 million people.
  • Our weather is becoming increasingly unpredictable and 7 out of 10 of the warmest years on record have occurred in the last decade.
  • Within the next 20 years we could be importing up to 80% of our gas from places as far away as Malaysia. If we think gas is expensive now, what will it cost then?
  • Turning your heating thermostat down by 1° C to a minimum of 20° C will cut your energy bills by 10% a year.
  • The average temperature in our homes in 1970 was 12.6° C. By 2001 this had risen to 18.9° C.
  • 40% of the heat lost in an average home escapes through the loft and walls. 250mm of loft insulation can save up to 25% of your heating costs.
