What are the issues? Energy
| The Issue | Wiltshire College |
|---|---|
| Global warming is the greatest risk facing the human race. | Wiltshire College has an energy policy, and our main sites buildings are assessed for energy efficiency, with the results displayed in entrance lobbies. |
Energy facts:
- A typical window left open overnight in winter will waste enough energy to drive a small car over 35 miles.
- Waste oil from nearly 3 million car oil changes in Britain is not collected; if collected properly, this could meet the annual energy needs of 0.5 million people.
- Our weather is becoming increasingly unpredictable and 7 out of 10 of the warmest years on record have occurred in the last decade.
- Within the next 20 years we could be importing up to 80% of our gas from places as far away as Malaysia. If we think gas is expensive now, what will it cost then?
- Turning your heating thermostat down by 1° C to a minimum of 20° C will cut your energy bills by 10% a year.
- The average temperature in our homes in 1970 was 12.6° C. By 2001 this had risen to 18.9° C.
- 40% of the heat lost in an average home escapes through the loft and walls. 250mm of loft insulation can save up to 25% of your heating costs.
