Who is this course for

Those wishing to pursue a career in Hairdressing. This course provides an NVQ Level 2 qualification in basic hairdressing skills for students age 19 and over or those with previous experience.

What does this course aim to do

Provides a foundation qualification in basic hairdressing skills.

Employment opportunities

May lead to:
Junior stylist in a salon or working in a health Spa.

NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing
Advanced Apprenticeship in Level 3 Hairdressing

About this course

During the course you will learn a variety of techniques in all aspects of hairdressing. This will include blow drying and setting; putting hair up; cutting; perming and colouring. You will work with the general public implementing customer service procedures and manage the reception area; learning safe methods of storing client information manually and on the computer.

Competition work and Work experience is an essential part of your course, which can be in a placement of your choice, but the staff will help you secure a place if you do not already have one.

How will I be assessed?

In the 'Aspire' college hair salon and during your work experience (if there is a qualified assessor in the salon). In addition, there are some internal tests.

Will I have to study at home?

A minimum of 6-hours per week home study is required.

Are there any additional costs

You will need a uniform and a kit for this course; order forms will be given out during the induction week. In cases of financial hardship funds may be available to help with the cost of this.

Entry requirements

Hairdressing NVQ 1, plus Application of Number and Communication Level 1 or adults who wish to return to education and bring a commitment and wider life experience to their studies.

Final Qualifications

City & Guilds Hairdressing NVQ Level 2.

Units

There are 9 units for a full qualification at Level 2:

Advise and consult with clients
Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
Style and finish hair
Set and dress hair
Cut hair using basic techniques
Change hair colour using basic techniques
Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
Ensure your actions reduce the risks to health and safety

Optional units

Perm or neutralise hair or

Plait and twist hair

Enrichment units

Key/functional skills in ICT at the appropiate level. This is an important part of today's society with many salons using computer systems to record client data, keep track of stock and record appointments and sales.

Tutorial Services

As a full-time student at Wiltshire College, you will be allocated a personal tutor and will receive a tutorial session of at least one-hour per week and a one-to-one personal tutorial at least three times per year.

The purpose of the tutorial is to ensure that you are making the necessary progress towards the achievement of your main qualification aim and to address any academic or personal issues that you may wish to raise.

Course Fees

Students aged 18 or under on the 31st of August 2010 will not be required to pay.

Students aged 19 or over on the 31st August 2010 will pay a reduced rate of £120 if you meet one of the criteria listed here.

All other applicants will be expected to pay the full course cost of £870
