Who is the course for?

This course is an ideal starting point for those wishing to work as a fitness instructor in the health fitness industry. This course equally suits those who wish to pursue a career in the industry or those looking to be flexible around existing commitments and diversify their skills.

You should be at least 18 years old and have awareness of using a gym, aligned with a passion to teach and instruct within the Health and Fitness industry.

There are no formal entry requirements, but an understanding of anatomy, physiology and exercise is beneficial.


What does the course aim to do?

The course aims to give you the grounding required to be become a successful gym instructor. This is achieved by combining theoretical knowledge and practical experience. You will have the opportunity to learn the theory of exercise and fitness whilst being supported in the gym environment. This approach aims to develop the practical skills required for fitness instruction.

The course will help you prepare for both the knowledge based assessment and practical demonstrations you will be required to do in order pass the qualification.


What will be covered?

This course covers exercise and fitness knowledge, structuring a gym programme, as well as how to instruct safely and effectively.

You will learn a variety of exercises and training methods as well as specific teaching and instructing skills on this course. You will become confident in designing a personalised training programme that takes into account the client's physical condition and goals.

The course has theoretical and practical units covering the following areas:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
  • Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
  • Principles of Exercise Fitness and Health
  • Know How to Support Clients Who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity
  • Planning Gym-Based Exercise
  • Instructing Gym-Based Exercise.

Each session involves theory and practical learning and so excellent attendance is vital to develop the technique and instructional skills required to be successful.


What are the final qualifications?

On successful completion, you will achieve the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym based exercise). This allows you to gain entry on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2.


How will I be assessed?

The course a range of assessment methods will be used in order for you to be prepared for the final overall assessments. These include:

  • Exam Practice
  • Practice sessions in the gym for technique and instruction
  • Learning activities
  • Worksheets.

Final assessment combines 2 elements:

  • Exercise and fitness Knowledge (Multiple choice exam)
  • Practical assessment (Gym based competence).

What facilities will be provided?

Session will take place in both the gym and class settings.

The gym includes a range Cable resistance machines, Free weights and CV equipment.

Class rooms have full IT access and opportunities will be available to access the College’s online learning portal (eStudy) to further enhance the learning environment.


Will I have to study at home?

Regular formative assessment will be included throughout the course and some home study will be required. This will be accessible via your course manual and the College’s online learning portal (eStudy).


Are there any additional costs?

There are no additional costs. The course manual and award registration fee are included in the price.

You will be required to attend sessions with appropriate clothing and footwear for a gym environment (eg Tracksuit, training apparel and trainers).
