Who is the course for?

There is no doubt that the old addage that everyone has a book in them somewhere is true but discovering the knack of getting it down on paper is another matter. If you can sense that spark of originality within you but need to kindle your ideas or if you want to develop your writing skills but are in need of some inspiration, this course will meet your needs. It aims to stimulate and inspire you to write as well as to edit your work and that of other students. We welcome all levels of writer on this fun, stimulating and informative course which will introduce you to new writers and your writing to new techniques.

What does the course aim to do?

The aim of the course is to enable you to develop your writing skills, to improve your ability to edit your work and to provide a constructive and supportive environment in which you can create and share your work.

On completion, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate that you have developed a sense of your own voice as a creative writer
  • demonstrate an understanding of the range of creative forms in which you will work
  • demonstrate the development of your creative writing techniques
  • demonstrate confidence in your abilities to edit and revise your work.


What will be covered?

The following topics will provide a framework for each course session:

  • Short, warm-up activity
  • Creative Writing Exercises - objects as stimuli; guided writing
  • Presentation of work to the class
  • Provision and receipt of feedback
  • Follow-up exercises.


What are the final qualifications?

There are no final qualifications associated with this course.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course tutor.

What facilities will be provided?

There are no specific facilities provided for this course but you will have access to a wide range of College facilities details of which can be found in the Wiltshire College Handbook.

Will I have to study at home?

There is no obligation to study at home but you will benefit from undertaking some additional study between course sessions. Some suggested references are indicated in the Additional Information section below.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no additional costs.

What course can I do next?

You can re-enrol on this course in the Spring Term or you can enrol on the Creative Writing or Poetry Workshop dayschools that take place each term. If you are interested in pursuing your Creative Writing interests, you might consider the Open University's Diploma in Literature and Creative Writing.

You should bring with you a pen and writing paper.
